Man City Winter Transfer Summary
Players In
Maxi Perrone – 11m euros
Players Out
Joao Cancelo – Loan ( Bayern Munich)
Transfer Summary
The only headline and significant talking point here is the departure of Joao Cancelo. There have been eyebrows raised and noises of fan disappointment with this move, that came just a few days before the end of January.
Cancelo was one of the best players in recent years, but almost out of nothing he was sent out on loan, going to Bayern Munich with a purchase option in the summer.
Whatever the reason behind Cancelo’s shock departure, it has underlined Pep Guardiola’s importance and decisiveness at the helm. It seems likely this was a decision made in anger but will weaken their squad notably.
The speedy attacking fullback that can also play on the wing was not a starter in recent weeks, but without question, his proven quality going forward was better than anything else in the remaining pieces of the Man City squad.
Guardiola has weakened the team and squad by forcing this player out of the club. Kyle Walker is on the decline and although homegrown Rico Lewis has had rave reviews, he isn’t close to the best version of Joao Cancelo.
Cancelo has become more of a left-back than a right-back, but the right side is his best position. Nathan Ake can play centre back or left back, but now by default becomes their starter on the left side of the four which doesn’t scare opponent defences. He has had a decent season but again, nothing like the same attacking impact as Cancelo.
Maximo Perrone is the only newcomer which hasn’t been sent out on loan. He is a 20-year-old holding midfielder from Argentina, last played at Velez. He was signed for a little under 10m British pounds, but purely one for the future.
