Transfer Summary
There was only one signing made by Liverpool and that in itself is the main headline, as it was clear Liverpool are in desperate need of a high-quality centre midfielder in order to make a serious run for 4th place.
Optimistic fans believe that the club is keeping hold of their funds to splash out big on Jude Bellingham in the summer, though it is debatable whether one of the world’s most wanted players would opt to join a club that is not in the champions league!
Focusing on the business which did happen, Liverpool moved quickly after the World Cup to sign one of Holland’s most eye-catching players during their run, Cody Gakpo.
The Dutch top scorer in Qatar was being targeted by other EPL clubs including their bitter rivals Manchester United, so it was seen as a tremendous coup to sign him at the time. In reality, however, the team has not improved with his presence. It is also fair to say that something is not right at the club, so he is a player of potential and could be a success if and when the club return to form.
Cody Gakpo – a very tall attacker which can play anywhere across the three, is mainly marketed as a left winger. At the time of writing the former PSV man has yet to shine in turn. He is almost ever present as a starter, albeit due to injuries.
Compared to the likes of Luiz Diaz, Firmino, and Diego Jota who are all sidelined, Gakpo is likely to fall out of the best side when all are available.
Rhys Williams – he is a young centre-back. He returned from a loan from Blackpool where he was a starter. Not expected to feature for the senior side now they are out of the FA Cup.
