Transfers Summary

Arsenal is notably stronger but more in terms of squad depth as opposed to having improved the strongest XI.

They have trimmed the squad by sending out fringe men on loan. All of which this season were miles away from being considered to begin matches on merit. In fact, they were rarely even included in the gameday squad.

Crucially, Arsenal has spent reasonable money to bring in three experienced players that can at the very least, apply good pressure to begin matches on merit.

Trossard – The former Brighton attacker can play anywhere across the three up front, but is mostly used on the left side. He isn’t as dynamic as Martinelli their impressive current left winger, but the Belgian has a better eye for goal and crucially, the experience to make a difference. He will be a big player off the bench and improves their creativity and goal threat. With Trossard, it is important to note he would have been double the price had his contract not be nearing its end.

Jorginho – was signed from Chelsea who were very pleased to move him on even for a relatively small fee, which isn’t great reading for Arsenal fans. This is a signing fans of the club were not massively upbeat about, not least because at the age of 31, is beyond his best.

The Italian has the experience and just enough quality to act as cover for their starting centre midfielders. They wanted Caicedo from Brighton who would have been pushing for starts on merit, but Jorginho was much cheaper and the next best option once Brighton refused to sell at 75m euros.

Jakub Kiwior – they signed the Polish centre back from Spezia where he has been one of their star men. The strong defender is only 22 and so with good potential to work a way into the starting side in the next 12-18 months. The short-term expectancy is however, he is first in line when Gabriel or Saliba are missing.

The Pole is a massive upgrade on the likes of Rob Holding, so this and the newcomers above leave Arsenal a significantly stronger squad.

Lokonga, Marquinhos, and Cedric Brown were all sent out and this will barely be noticed. The belief within the club was that Lokonga was going backwards and not liked by Arteta. Since this season began, none of them almost ever got called up to the gameday squad unless it was for the league cup or Europa matches.
