Transfers Summary

There is only one significant move that affects the club this season, which is the signing of the promising and proven winger Anthony Gordon.

Newcastle released a couple of veterans of the EPL in the shape of Chris Wood and Jonjo Shelvey. As a result of these winter moves, Newcastle is slightly stronger and the squad has an improved attacking threat.

Gordon – they signed 21-year-old winger Gordon from Everton for 45.6m euros. For the amount paid by Newcastle, this has been generally viewed as a gamble in the sense the player was out of form and dropped by Everton this season, a club in the bottom three when he was signed.

My view on the signing is much more optimistic. He has great potential and with an improved attitude and sense of belonging, will be a player that can make a difference as a starter or important sub.

Gordon needs to work on the final pass or shot, but has tremendous speed, good dribbling ability, and will work extremely hard for the side.

Ashby – a promising young right-back from Scotland who last played for the West Ham youth side. This is purely a move for the future, but he was not sent on loan and so may be used as the first cover when Trippier is out.

Shelvey and Chris Wood depart and neither was pushing for starts on merit this season. The former was appreciated by the Newcastle fans to this day, but not used since they signed Bruno Guimaraes and the revelation that is Joel Linton as a centre midfielder. He fell behind those two plus Willock and Longstaff, so well down the pecking order after recovering from a bad injury.
