Transfer Summary

Chelsea’s record-breaking winter signings made global news on a football level, sending shock waves around Europe and particularly through the EPL. It is the quality more than the number of signings that will bring about a significantly better Chelsea team, one that on paper, should be pushing at the very least top four if the season began tomorrow.

Their first game after the window closed was a disappointing 0-0 with neighbours Fulham, and the club remained in a lowly 9th position in the table as a result.

The expectation and hope among the fans however are that they shoot up the table, and for punters that have belief in these additions working the desired effect, Chelsea can be bet around 2.55 to make the top six.

I like this top six bet not only for the key new signings I’ve detailed below but as importantly,  Reece James and Ben Chilwell are back fit. These six men make up more than half of the outfield side that on paper at least, is as good as anything in the league bar perhaps a worried Manchester City.

The odds of a top-six at the start of the season were around 1.10, illustrating the decline this season and the need for the club to spend money.

The headline signings and ones set on making the biggest improvement are Enzo Fernandez (121m), Mudryk (70m euros), and Joao Felix.  I expect all three to become important players, along perhaps with Badiashille (38m).

These four new faces have already received good reviews which is crucial, as one negative about such a big influx of new and foreign players is how quickly they settle in and integrate.

Rather bizarrely despite his performances so far, centre-back Badiashille was not included in the Chelsea squad for the Champions League. And herein lies a potential issue for Potter the Chelsea manager, how to keep such a huge squad happy.

Adding to the former Brighton boss’s dilemma was the fact that unsigned paperwork in the final hours before the window closed meant they couldn’t ship Ziyech out on loan to PSG. This has left them with not only a player with morale on the floor, but an extra body in the building where Potter will feel obliged to use.

With so many new faces it is difficult to say whether the obvious competition for places will be taken over by the managers’ urge to keep as many senior players content, and not lose interest.

Most Chelsea fans were delighted to sell Jorghino (10m) to rivals Arsenal, but the club probably needed to ship out a couple more too to keep the morale and match sharpness high throughout the dressing room.
