Tottenham Hotspur have decided to back head coach Antonio Conte this summer as the North London club have already signed Ivan Perisic, Fraser Foster and Yves Bissouma from Inter Milan, Southampton and Brighton, respectively. Another position that needs strengthening is the right-back slot. Emerson Royal has not fully convinced the Italian manager, while Matt Doherty has spent the majority of the last season either injured or on the bench. One name Spurs have been monitoring is RB Leipzig’s Nordi Mukiele. The Frenchman spent four solid seasons at the East German outfit and could make the next step in his career.
Nordi Mukiele played in all six games for RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League. The Frenchman was there on the pitch for 485 minutes. In that time, Mukiele scored once for Die Roten Bullen. He did so at a rate of 0.17 per 90 which is slightly higher than the 0.1 xG per 90 estimated. This puts Mukiele in the 89th percentile for defenders. The Montreuil-born right-back fired off just over one shot per 90 with an accuracy of 33.33%. The 24-year-old registered 2.4 touches in the opponents’ penalty area per 90, putting him in the top 6% of defenders. The full-back also completed just under 89% of his dribbles.
Mukiele managed to provide one assist for RB Leipzig in the UCL. This brings a goal involvement every 242.5 minutes for the fullback. Even though the Frenchman had only one assist to his name, he did so at a rate of 0.17 per 90, ranking him in the top 9% of defenders. Once again, just like with xG, Mukiele slightly outperformed his xA per 90 of 0.1. However, the Montreuil-born full-back’s one drawback is his involvement in the build-up play, with only 35 pass attempts per 90 at a measly pass accuracy of 72%. With 2.6 crosses into the box per 90, the 24-year-old is in the upper quartile for defenders. And having generated 1.04 shot assists per 90, Mukiele ranks in the top 12% of defenders in this category.
Mukiele attempted 15.61 defensive actions per 90 for RB Leipzig in the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League campaign. This puts the Frenchman in the upper quintile for defenders. He had a success rate of 83.33%. Mukiele also attempted 8.15 defensive duels per 90 and had an aerial duel success rate of 73.68%. The 24-year-old right-back completed 7.11 interceptions per 90 and 2.43 recoveries in the opposition’s half per 90, putting him in the 89th and 71st percentiles, respectively, for defenders.
Nordi Mukiele has had a solid time in East Germany with the Red Bull-owned team. But, he has not played 2,000 minutes of Bundesliga action even once during his four seasons since joining from Montpellier in the summer of 2018. However, the Frenchman does provide better defence than Emerson Royal at right-back.
