Manchester City needs a replacement for Fernandinho, and right now, they might have found the successor from Portugal. Matheus Nunes – the midfielder who plays for Sporting CP.
Manchester City are seeking a summer deal for Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes. The Portuguese sources are stating that Nunes would be a Fernandinho replacement at the Etihad Stadium club.
The 36-year-old has served City incredibly over the past several years but is now past his prime. Manager Pep Guardiola may see this summer as the ideal time to secure 23-year-old Nunes to rotate with Rodri. The reports also state that Sporting want roughly 40 million euros for Nunes’ signature.
Matheus Nunes is becoming a definite target for Manchester City, who could look to secure the midfielder in the summer after making initial enquiries. The Premier League champions are now looking at potentially reducing Sporting CP‘s asking price by including favourable players in the deal.
The Brazilian, who plays internationally for Portugal, is protected by Sporting with a release clause worth 60 million euros, and the Lions set a minimum price of 40 million euros, something that the Citizens are already aware of.
In Manchester City’s two-legged victory over Sporting CP in the last-16 round of this season’s Champions League, Matheus Nunes managed to catch the attention of Pep Guardiola. The midfielder was an impressive outlet for the Portuguese outfit and now features firmly on the radar of the Premier League side.
Nunes has become a mainstay at Sporting CP, who remain in the hunt for the domestic title despite lagging behind Porto with six points separating the two sides. His role in central midfield fits the Guardiola mould of midfielder, who could walk in the starting XI next season.
Manchester City could look to include some players as part of the deal, which could soften the blow of a huge price tag. Sporting CP are expected to trigger an 8.5 million euros option for Pedro Porro, which can be discounted from the asking price for Nunes.
Meanwhile, Man City could include more players such as Ante Palaversa and Talles Magno, either on loan or permanently to the Portuguese club.
Such a deal could fall in line for both clubs, although Sporting CP would like to have a chunk of the cash to continue their business model. On the pitch, Nunes could prove to be a solid purchase for Man City, who also face competition from other Premier League sides, including Tottenham and Everton.
However, considering Manchester City’s ideas regarding the proposals, including several players, Guardiola’s side could have the advantage over the others. Moreover, Nunes might jump at the chance of playing for the Premier League champions and under the Catalan to further develop his career alongside a host of international colleagues.
