Manchester United signed Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund this summer to give strength to their attack from the right side. But the England international has featured on the left side this season. His two starts were both as an attacking player from the left side. Sancho is yet to score or assist this season, and questions are already being asked.
Now let us look at how the youngster has actually performed so far this season and his stats so far.
Sancho has played 199 minutes so far this season and has featured in all four games, so do consider the fact that this is a small sample size.
When looking at the above chart, the general rule is that the longer the bar the better the performance – you can see the league average in the middle and the % is the percentile rank the player is in.
Sancho has only attempted one shot and that was off target. He scored eight times and had 12 assists last season for Dortmund. His attacking actions success rate is less than average of other players this season.
The expected assist rate is less than average and Sancho is yet to open his assist account this season. His passing rate per 90 minutes has been very high this season and ranks in a high percentile. Sancho has played a good number of balls into the final third. His accuracy rate and forward pass rate is also more than half of the other Premier League players.
Sancho has only featured once in his favoured right side and that was against Wolves, where he came on as a sub and featured on both sides in the match. In the above viz we can clearly see that he has played very wide and received only has two passes in the opposition box.
Four of the passes he attempted had a high XT rate. He is yet to attempt a pass into the opposition 6-yard box. We can clearly see that all the passes he attempted into the box were from the left side and only a few were attempted from the middle of the park.
The red area in the heat map clearly suggests that he has played a slightly deeper role allowing left-back Luke Shaw to make runs. Sancho has also made some runs into the opposition box but mainly from a wider side.
Jadon Sancho stats clearly show that he has created fewer chances and shots attempts are low. Manchester United fans will be patient but will also hope that their new signing produces some of his Bundesliga form in the coming weeks.
