Chelsea’s new signing Hakim Ziyech wants his Ajax teammate Andre Onana to follow him to Stamford Bridge this summer. The Moroccan international has already made the switch to West London after Chelsea agreed a £37m deal with the Dutch champions. Ziyech will join in the summer and has been Ajax’s most influential player in recent seasons.
The playmaker has helped the Dutch side to a domestic double and a fairy-tale Champions League run where they reached the semi-finals last season. But. The 26-year-old doesn’t want to move to the current Europa League champions without his current shot-stopper at Ajax. He is hopeful of persuading Onana to follow him to Chelsea this summer as he believes that the Cameroonian international can rival current Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for the number one spot.
Onana could well be tempted in the move after serving Ajax for five years and the goalkeeper’s preference is a switch to a London club in either Chelsea or Tottenham Hotspur both keen. The former Barcelona youth player has established himself as one of Europe’s most talented goalkeepers outside of Europe’s top five leagues. Now might be the right time to take the next step in his footballing career and the 23-year-old has the backing of club team-mate Ziyech to do just that –preferably following him to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has questioned his current crop of keepers and has left Kepa out of the starting XI for several matches this season. The world’s most expensive keeper has had to watch Willy Caballero, an Argentine goalkeeper who is coming to the end of his career take his place. However, Kepa has been reinstalled in the sticks by Lampard and it seems that time out has helped the Spanish international. But, his future remains uncertain, and a move for Onana could be a promising option for Lampard and Chelsea in the summer. The Blues will know all about the Ajax keeper after his heroics in two ties this season against them in the Champions’ League group stage. Lampard will assess Kepa’s form from now until the season where the club will be looking to make up for the lost time in the transfer market and Onana is a target being identified.
