Chelsea are targeting a new left-back when the transfer window reopens, this has been deemed as a priority. At the moment, the Blues are set to face a major blow in the transfer market with reports emerging in France that Paris Saint-Germain are the favourites to sign Alex Telles in the summer. The 27-year-old was high on Frank Lampard’s lists of acquisitions for the summer due to his remarkable low price tag.
The Brazilian is contracted to Portuguese giants FC Porto until the summer of 2021 and they are believed to be open to selling him on the cheap this summer rather than losing him for nothing in a year.
However, it seems that the French champions are in the driving seat to seal the transfer of the Brazilian full-back on a bargain for £21m. For Chelsea, it will mean they will have to look elsewhere as they certainly need to bolster in the left-back department which has been a problem in recent years with Marcos Alonso and Emerson failing to make that position their own.
With Telles most likely switching Porto to PSG in the summer, here are three possible alternatives that the club should look at when the transfer window reopens.
Alex Grimaldo – SL Benfica
There isn’t just one quality left-back in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. Alex Grimaldo of Benfica is another option for Chelsea in the summer after getting rave reviews about the full-back in recent seasons.
The Spaniard is one of best full-backs in the league along with Alex Telles and is three years younger than the Brazilian. The 24-year-old, who graduated from the famed La Masia youth academy of Barcelona, is similar to Jordi Alba in many ways and Chelsea should certainly consider a move for the bombarding full-back. He is a vital element in Benfica’s attack and is defensively pretty solid too. A long-term prospect for Chelsea given the player’s age, but he would be an assured signing if available at the right price.
Ben Chilwell – Leicester City
The English full-back has been long heavily linked with the Blues for some time now and was believed to be their priority target before they switched their focus on Alex Telles. One of the reasons why the club opted for Telles was because of Chilwell’s high asking price. However, he is one of the best full-backs in the Premier League and has helped his club side, Leicester City be in contention for Champions League football next season.
The 23-year-old can contribute both in defence, as well as in attack, an element lacking in both Alonso and Emerson as they both only are good for attacking. At the age he is, Leicester City are likely to demand more than £60m for Chilwell who is regarded as one of the best in the league. If money is not a problem, Chelsea signing Chilwell would be an absolute no-brainer.
Nicolas Tagliafico – Ajax
Since the Argentine international joined Eredivisie giants Ajax in the summer of 2017, Tagliafico has established himself as one of Europe’s most consistent left-backs. At 27, it is time for him to move to a bigger club in the top five leagues in Europe and Chelsea can certainly offer him that opportunity. London rivals Arsenal have been monitoring the Ajax player and have failed to bring the full-back to North London.
Tagliafico is easily the best full-back in Eredivisie and is one of the best all-round full-backs in Europe as well. He is also likely to cost much lesser than Chilwell, making him an excellent option for the Blues if they were to exercise buying him.
