After a two week international break, two of the top 10 are meeting for an exciting match. The weekend match of the Premier League is between Tottenham Hotspur against West Ham United at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
Spurs are pretty much enjoying their winning streak as they are seven matches unbeaten in all competitions. They thrashed Manchester United in their last match in the Premier League, scoring six against at their home which was a pretty big win for José Mourinho and also for Spurs. The Special One’s tactics and strategies are showing great results for the team.
David Moyes wasn’t there on the stands for their last two Premier League games due to Covid-19 but West Ham has won both their Premier League matches but they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Everton. However, they bounced backed by ending Leicester City’s unbeaten run this campaign. They scored three goals and were truly deserving of the points at the King Power stadium. The last time they met in the Premier League season 2019/20, Spurs were victorious in both games of the campaign. The final score was 2-0 and 2-3 respectively. Here are the tactical analysis and the preview of the upcoming match on Sunday. Mourinho’s tactics have been successful until now while Moyes will return from the stands for the match.
I think this would be the formation forSpurs with their typical 4-2-3-1. The Special One will deploy different tactics and strategies to use in this match. The goalkeeper won’t change. Sergio Reguilón had an interesting game at the Old Trafford so he would start in this match. The rest of the defence is the same.
In midfield, Moussa Sissoko and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg would be the ideal fit to start. They support the front three and also are there to defend. Mourinho might give some minutes to Dele Alli and Gedson Fernandes as well.
One of the most interesting things which can happen this weekend is that Gareth Bale might have his Premier League debut for the team. Bale was injured and he was expected to return in October. It’s likely that he will start for Mourinho and could have an exquisite debut at his new home. The lone striker should be the same, Kane. With six assists and three goals in the Premier League, the Englishman is their most important player.
West Ham‘s formation would be a 5-4-1. Łukasz Fabiański should start in goal with five in defence. Aaron Cresswell and Fabián Balbuena could play from the centre whereas Arthur Masuaku and Vladimír Coufal will play from the wings.
The midfield is set for the Hammers and Declan Rice and Tomáš Souček won’t be left out of the top 11 anytime soon. They help the players hold possession from the centre.
Last but not the least, Michail Antonio will likely be the lone striker for this match. His performances have been crucial for West Ham to get victories after the lockdown in their previous campaign and even now, he’s constantly been on the scoresheet.
How will Tottenham Hotspur play?
Tottenham have scored a lot of goals in the last few games. They are the attacking team in this fixture. The general formation for Spurs will likely be 4-2-3-1. The transition formation would then be 5-3-2 or 4-4-2. Spurs have two full-backs who are active both in defence as well as in attack. Reguilón and Aurier are constantly on the flanks for attack but they also fall back and defend whenever they lose the ball up front. Aurier was also on the scoresheet against United.
Son and Kane will be the ones to exploit the space. As u can see, Reguilón is deploying a through ball in-behind. Son and Kane are alert about this and they act quickly as Spurs attack from the wings to the centre.
Ndombele and Sissoko will be part of the midfield. They will be the people to take the play from the centre to the wings. Son and Kane are also an important part of the attack. Their deadly combination can be dangerous for the defence.
Eric Lamela will help Spurs to attack from the wings during the counter-attacks. Here you can see as Tottenham are starting their counter-attack, Lamela is there to support Kane and to get in the space in front of him. During the Manchester United game, Spurs had 606 passes and in that 90% of the passes were accurate. Hojbjerg will also be a crucial player in the buildup from the midfield area. He had 98 passes out of 606 which was the highest in the whole game.
Spurs don’t have the best defensive record. They haven’t kept a clean sheet in this campaign with five goals conceded so far. However, Spurs’ defence has been improving as of late. Eric Dier and Davinson Sánchez are both very strategically smart and they defend well from the centre. The attackers also come to defend when it is needed for the team, as we’ll see below.
Spurs lost the ball in the opposition’s half with most of the players high up the pitch. However, Son helps Tottenham defend despite being an attacker. But the issue is that Spurs have given up four goals because of their errors and have also conceded four penalties in their League campaign. This suggests they are careless in their half.
This is one of the weaknesses the team is facing which West Ham can surely exploit. Sometimes the defenders are clumsy and they give away penalties and big changes so Mourinho needs to address this sooner rather than later.
How will West Ham United play?
Moyes has been a hero since arriving at the club. From saving them from relegation to staying in top 10, West Ham have been on the rise in recent months. Their ideal formation is 5-4-1 and sometimes during the last minutes, it will shift to 4-4-1-1 or 4-2-3-1. West Ham prefer a lone striker only and that’s why Antonio is a very important player for them.
West Ham’s tactics and strategies might be different depending on the formation we see. However, one thing we know is that they would want to attack from the centre rather than the wings and there, in midfield, Rice and Soucek are their key players.
Their strategy is to get the ball in the centre. In the above image, you can see the ball is been circulated in the centre of the pitch. They had options in the wings but they play in the centre and having four in midfield certainly helps them to play that way. Rice will be crucial for this as he has 91% accurate passes this season.
He plays half the balls to the wings and half through the centre. West Ham also attack unexpectedly from the wings. The defenders create the chances by deploying through balls if they find their teammate in a good position.
In the above picture, the West Ham defender notices his player getting ready to run, and since Leicester are playing a high defensive line, there is a lot of space in-behind. In the previous match, they had more long balls than Leicester with 54.
West Ham also play a high defensive line when they want to create more chances.
During pressing on the opponent’s half, West Ham have two players on each player and they instruct their midfielders to attack more. Even though Antonio doesn’t come back much but he is active when receiving the ball in counter-attacks. In general, West Ham’s defence is pretty good as the Hammers have kept two consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League.
They also have more than 50% of duels won. Another great quality of them is that all players fall back when they don’t have the ball and the opponents are in the attacking phase. Except for their lone striker, of course, as we have mentioned earlier. You can see below how all the players are inside their half to defend. This gives them the man advantage inside the box.
Here is an example of how all the players are there to defend. Leicester have six players in the opponent’s half whereas West Ham have nine players getting back to defend.
Both managers managed Manchester United in their early years and they are talented managers so both teams are capable of beating each other. Tottenham vs West Ham will be interesting to watch, with Bale’s potential debut and also Moyes coming back to the sidelines. This match should be filled with energy and new tactics.
My predictions would be Tottenham 3, West Ham 1. According to the analysis, Tottenham are in good form and they will want to continue their unbeaten run. West Ham will also give Spurs a good fight but Mourinho might get the edge in the game. However, it’s the Premier League and anything can happen at any time.
