Liverpool might not be getting as much fire as they used to as the second in line for the league and current champions of the cup got dealt a huge injury blow.
Liverpool sits comfortably in the first position with 24 points, a big eight point lead ahead of Manchester City who trails behind in second on the table.
Manchester City is considered a threat to Liverpool’s chances of winning the league because they are the current champion. Also, seeing how Liverpool almost won the league but got beaten to it by Manchester City last season.
City became the first team to successfully defend the Premier League title in 10 years but were pushed all the way by Liverpool in one of the most thrilling title races in the competition’s history. (Premier League Stat)
Pep Guardiola’s side claimed the Trophy with 98 points, just two fewer than the historic 100 they earned in 2017/18. But even that haul was only one point more than Liverpool who despite only one defeat all season ended as runners-up.
The top two’s combined total of 195 points was also the most ever as City and Liverpool established unmatched levels in a title chase.
Liverpool’s advantage this season
Liverpool has opened up their campaign this season with an impressive form, establishing an eight point lead over their cup rival Manchester City.
City’s hopes of clawing back the deficit now look to have been handed a major blow with Sergio Aguero, their all-time leading goal-scorer and top scorer in all eight seasons at the club, suffering with fitness problems.
Liverpool have been incredibly lucky with injuries in recent seasons. During the 2018/19 campaign, the only serious long term injury sustained was Joe Gomez‘ leg break, even then, Joel Matip stepped into the side and established himself as one of the continent’s leading centre backs.
Considering that Man City are already without Aymeric Laporte until the new year, Kevin De Bruyne, John Stones, Benjamin Mendy and Kyle Walker are all battling to return from injury after the international break. The Cityzen’s deep squad is currently being decimated by injury, their dearth of defensive cover has been a major contributor to their 2 defeats this season and that’s a great advantage for Liverpool, at least enough for them to be sure of their lead on the Premier League table.
While Aguero’s injury seem to be a minor problem, the reality of it being much than anticipated might be the nail in the coffin for Manchester City.
In the Liverpool camp however, the injury news for them will be a good development seeing how much of a driving force Aguero is to Man City, Liverpool’s arch rival for the league.
