Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga came under immense criticism during the 2019/20 Premier League season, and even his teammates seemed to turn against him after yet another shocking performance in the Blues’ 5-3 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on the penultimate day of the term.

Frank Lampard’s side conceded an embarrassing 54 goals across the course of the season – more than any other team in the top half – and Kepa’s poor performances even lead to a stint of him being dropped for 38-year-old Willy Cabarello, whilst Lampard has also criticised the 25-year-old on numerous occasions.

Unsurprisingly, Chelsea – who are massive outsiders in the Champions League winner odds after losing 3-0 to Bayern Munich in the round of 16 first leg – have been linked with a number of goalkeepers this summer, whilst Kepa – who cost the Blues a world record fee for a ‘keeper of £71m – is expected to leave Stamford Bridge. So, with that in mind let’s take a look at some of the shot-stoppers who could replace the Spaniard.

Jan Oblak – Atlético Madrid

27-year-old Jan Oblak has made a name for himself in Spain as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, so it comes as no surprise that Lampard has reportedly placed the Slovenian international at the top of his list.

It is believed that Oblak wants to move to a more ambitious club after Atlético Madrid failed to compete for the La Liga title this season, and Chelsea are certainly making their intentions known with Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech already signed, whilst they look set to splash even more cash with many other names linked, including Kai Havertz,

However, the Madrid outfit have reportedly placed a £109m price tag on their star man, whilst Manchester United could also pose a threat for Chelsea as David De Gea is also performing below par.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen – Barcelona

According to Mundo Deportivo, Lampard is also interested in Barcelona ace Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The move could also involve Kepa going in the other direction, according to the Spanish publish. Although, it might be hard to convenience the Catalan club to swap the 28-year-old for the Stamford Bridge flop.

The German international’s contract doesn’t run out at the Nou Camp for another two years. However, it’s believed that talks for a new deal have stalled after beginning back in much, whilst Barça could also be forced to sell their number 1 ‘keeper due to financial issues.

Andre Onana – Ajax

Ajax shot-stopper Andre Onana would be one of Chelsea’s cheapest options this summer. It is believed that the Cameroon international would cost Chelsea just £27m. However, the Blues would need to go head-to-head with Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain for the 24-year-old’s signature.

In Chelsea’s favour, Onana has made it clear that he wants to leave the Amsterdam side this summer, saying: “It was five great years here, but now my time has come to take a step.” It is also believed that the goalkeeper would like to link back up with former Ajax team mate, and Stamford Bridge newbie, Ziyech.

Dean Henderson – Sheffield United (on-loan from Manchester United)

Chelsea are ready to let money do the talking in order to lure highly-rated English ‘keeper Dean Henderson to West London. The 23-year-old has impressed during his loan spell at Sheffield United, and the Blues are now believed to be prepared to offer him double his wages to convince him to swap his Old Trafford dream for the Bridge.

It is reported that Chelsea are willing to pay Henderson £170,000, a whopping £100,000 more than his current wages. However, their fierce rivalry with Manchester United would make the move the very difficult.
