Southampton v Grimsby Town – FA Cup Betting Preview

Southampton Summary

Southampton come into the game on a downer after a 1-0 loss against relegation rivals Leeds.

It was a crushing loss considering it was a six pointer type of game at the bottom. For the Saints, it was the tenth defeat in their last 12 Premier League matches.

However, the outlook is not as gloomy as that horrible run suggests things are in the club. 9 of those 12 losses were under previous manager Nathan Jones for whom the Southampton dressing room, or most of it, never played for.

Manager Rubén Selles first game was an outstanding win over Chelsea in Stamford bridge, and they had promising spells in the loss in Yorkshire. To win this well could be a turning point to the season, and it is likely that is how the manager pitches winning this game to his new side.

A cup run is not a priority compared to staying up, but they will aim for the win as it will greatly boost confidence to make the Quarter finals.

The home side is missing Orsic due to a concussion which is their main absence.

Adams is also a doubt due to a recent knock. This leaves them a little short on quality in attack.

Attacking right back Livramento remains out long term with a knee injury while Salisu is nursing a hip issue, but could be cleared to play.

Grimsby Town Summary

League Two side Grimsby are the lowest-ranked team remaining in the competition and come into this tie with a nothing to lose attitude.

Grimsby is extremely excited about the prospect of not only this match, but also the amazing prospect of making the last eight for the first time since 1938.

The mid-table Mariners may be the lower tank side left in the FA Cup, but they have had a tough run to get to this stage, consistently raising their game and beating opponents in leagues above them.

However, this could be a step too far. History isn’t with them as Grimsby have lost their last four FA Cup matches against Premier League opponents.

Boss Paul Hurst’s side are super motivated and will at the very least, enjoy the occasion and leave everything on the pitch.
