Things are finally looking up for Manchester United this season. They have improved in the Premier League, and are the favourites to win the Europa League. As the summer approaches, the Red Devils will look to the transfer window to potentially challenge for the title next season.
And David De Gea‘s situation at the club is one that needs to be addressed. The Spaniard, who is already a legend for United in his own right, could fetch a reasonable transfer fee that could, in turn, fund the purchase of the next De Gea. In a COVID-19 era, United’s transfer committee will look to improve upon their dealings in the past and make quieter, financially feasible signings.
This scout report provides a tactical analysis of 3 promising goalkeepers that could potentially fill United’s number 1 spot. Our analysis includes players under the sub £80 million price tag that will fit into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tactics.
1. Juan Musso (Udinese)
The 191cm tall Juan Musso has been in excellent form for Udinese this season. He has a healthy Post-Shot xG minus Goal Allowed of 0.09, and 8.9% crosses stopped. In addition, his save percentage per 90 of 77.1% is excellent. Largely accalaimed in the Serie A, the 26-year-old Argentine could be available for €20 million.
The above comparison between De Gea and Musso seems like night and day. However, De Gea’s higher PAdj Interceptions and Aerial Duel success rate indicate that he is adept at preventing dangerous situations for his team. The margins for these, however, are coachable. Buying Musso would be a steal for Man United.
2. Mike Maignan
Title contenders cannot be made without a top-end goalkeeper, and Mike Maignan is the last line of defence in Lille’s excellent title charge. The 25-year-old French Goalkeeper averages 0.82 Goals Against per 90, has a save percentage of 74.1%, and an outstanding clean sheet percentage of 44.7%. This has attracted interest from the likes of Tottenham as well.
Maignan outperforms De Gea in every metric except for Aerial duels won%. This may be a caveat at times, as Maignan’s height of 187cm is not amongst the tallest for goalkeepers. However, it is not that grave considering the sheer volume of aerial duels he engages in. Valued at the bargain price of €20 million, Maignan may the statement signing United need to challenge for the league next season.
3. Gianluigi Donnarumma (AC Milan)
This goalkeeper needs no introductions. If bought for the estimated value of €50 million, Donnarumma would be United’s marquee signing. The Italian has a save percentage of 70.2 % and an impressive penalty save percentage of 33.3%. In addition, his range of passing is well-rounded.
The above radar chart comparison speaks for itself. At 22, Donnarumma has shown signs of leadership and completeness and has a wealth of experience behind him. The main caveat for this move is resistance than AC Milan are likely to show in selling their star goalkeeper set to become the next Buffon. But if any team has made an audacious move before and succeeded, its the Red Devils.
All in all, the goalkeepers discussed above will add value to Manchester United’s overall solidity at the back in the long-run.
